Writing a letter to your MLA has never been easier. You can help us win the fight for provincial tobacco legislation by sending a message to your MLA.
Please view the tips below if you need some help writing your message.
Your letter will help to show your MLA that there is strong public support for provincial tobacco control legislation. Keep your letter short and to the point. Support your position with the facts. Be courteous.
Here are some specific suggestions:
Explain why you are writing Example: "I am writing to you regarding the issue of smoking in the workplace".
Explain what the problem is (refer to fact sheets) Example: "Secondhand smoke is a serious problem which affects nonsmokers. Health Canada and the National Cancer Institute have identified that secondhand smoke is a cause of cancer, heart disease and other illnesses in non-smokers".
Share how you have been personally affected by the problem Example: "Smoking in the workplace is affecting my health. I have tried for many years to get my employer to adopt a smoke-free policy with no success. I am afraid that I may lose my job if I push this issue any harder with my employer. A provincial law will help to protect my health and my job."
Explain what you are asking for: Example: "I request that the Alberta government pass a law that will protect all Albertans from secondhand smoke in workplaces and public establishments".
Request your MLA's support: Example: "As my elected representative, I would like to know if you support this important public health measure. If possible, please inform me of your position in writing".
Thank your MLA for reviewing your letter: Example: "Thank you for taking the time to review my concerns".
